Book Trailer:
Running thehot water, I washed myhands with mandarin-scented liquid soap. As steam rose, it misted over themirror. I examined the duct work, admiring the aesthetic. This was my kind ofplace, I decided. Urban chic. I patted my hands on a towel and squirted some ofthe chamomile-scented lotion provided over my fingers, rubbing it in gently. Myskin was so dry.
Perhaps Idaydreamed for a moment,
maybe realized I was hungry and thought about where we might go for snacknearby. Anyhow, for whatever reason I lost track of time. It couldnβt have beenfor more than a minute or two. Next thing I knew, someone was hammering on therestroom door.
I walkedover and unlocked thedoor. Kenzie was there along with Boujee. Both wore troubled expressions.
βSure youβre okay?β asked Kenzie.βYou can tell me, sheβs gone.β
βIβm fine.β
He shookhis head. βIf you sayso.β He seemed reluctant to say more. He paced over to the sink and wet hisfingers, wiping his face. βLetβs go. Wait.β He pointed to the mirror-stone.βWhatβs this?β
βYeah, notmuch of a mirror, isit?β
βI meant thewriting.β
At first I thoughtIβd misheardhim. βDid you say βwriting?ββ
He gave me this quirky smile, likehe thought we were playing. βYeah. βFind unicorns.β Whyβd you write that?β
He continued topoint directly atthe stone slab. βAnd yet.β
Completely baffled, I closed infor a better look. Then I saw it. The words took a few seconds to register ameaning. An inscription in the fine condensation was fading rapidly but still
legible. Traced, very obviously, by finger.
FIND UNICORNS.
My fingertips and nose feltsuddenly cold, as if theyβd caught a sharp breeze. I swallowed, grasping for amemory that wasnβt there.
I repeated, βI didnβt writeanything.β
Kenzieβs eyestwinkled. βThen who?Casper the ghost?β
Igrabbed his arm, not gently.βIβm being serious, Kenzie. I did not write those words.β
He flinched, as if Iβd flicked hisface. Anger flashed across his face for just a second.
He thinks Iβm lying, playing adumb game.
